The Benefits of Doula Support: A Hypnobirthing Educator’s Perspective
World Doula Week is starting tomorrow, it’s an initiative that runs every year from 22nd - 28th March and aims to raise awareness of the wonderful benefits of doula support during the transition through birth and the postpartum period.
As a hypnobirthing educator based in Sydney (and an experienced doula myself!), I have seen firsthand how a calm and positive birth experience can shape a family’s journey into parenthood. One of the most powerful ways to enhance this experience is with the support of a doula.
So let’s look at doulas and how they can enhance your experience of using hypnobirthing techniques during your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period.
What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Unlike midwives or obstetricians, doulas do not provide medical care, but instead focus on advocacy, comfort, and education. Their role is to empower parents with confidence and reassurance, helping them feel informed and supported every step of the way.
How Doula Support Enhances Hypnobirthing
Hypnobirthing is all about preparing for a calm, positive, and empowered birth by using relaxation, breathing, and mindset techniques. The presence of a doula can beautifully complement hypnobirthing by reinforcing these tools throughout labour and birth. They can do this by:
1. Creating a Relaxing and Supportive Birth Environment
A calm environment is key to hypnobirthing success, as it allows the birthing person’s body to work efficiently with birth hormones like oxytocin and endorphins. A doula helps create and maintain this peaceful atmosphere, setting up the space, ensuring that distractions and stressors are minimised while supporting the use of affirmations, visualisations, and relaxation techniques.
2. Continuous Emotional and Physical Support
Unlike medical providers who may need to step in and out of the birth space, a doula provides uninterrupted support throughout labour. They offer hands-on comfort measures like massage, acupressure, and gentle reminders to stay focused on breathing techniques,—all of which are fundamental to hypnobirthing. As well as more fundamental things like making sure the woman is well hydrated, is eating regularly, suggesting positions that may be helpful, the use of water, going to the bathroom - there’s a lot to remember in birth and having a doula means that the partner can focus on emotionally connecting with the mum instead of thinking of everything else as well.
3. Encouraging the Birth Partner’s Confidence
Hypnobirthing emphasises the role of the birth partner as a source of support, but partners can sometimes feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to help. A doula acts as a guide, offering reassurance and practical suggestions so the birth partner can be more engaged and effective in their support role. This allows couples to work together as a team while ensuring no one feels lost or left out.
4. Advocacy and Informed Decision-Making
A fundamental aspect of hypnobirthing is making informed choices that align with personal birth preferences. Doulas help parents understand their options and communicate their wishes clearly to medical professionals. Having a doula present can help parents feel empowered and supported in making decisions that align with their birth plan.
5. A Smoother and More Positive Birth Experience
Research has consistently shown that continuous doula support can lead to shorter labours, reduced need for medical interventions, and a more satisfying birth experience, as well as improved postpartum recovery. By maintaining a calm and positive mindset—key principles of hypnobirthing—families can experience a birth that feels empowering and fulfilling.
Postpartum Support and Recovery
The transition into parenthood doesn’t end at birth. Many doulas also provide postpartum care, offering support with breastfeeding, newborn care, and emotional well-being. This can be invaluable for parents who want to continue the calm and confident mindset they cultivated through hypnobirthing into the early days of parenthood. Also, the hypnobirthing techniques learned for birth are helpful in postpartum! Your could can remind you to use some affirmations and the breathing techniques to regulate your nervous system and stay more positive and confident during this time.
Choosing the Right Doula
Every birth journey is unique, and finding a doula who aligns with your birth philosophy is essential. Whether you are planning a hospital birth, home birth, or birth centre experience, the right doula will respect and enhance your hypnobirthing approach.
